Balanced Healthy Diet Vs. Crash Diet

Many of us, at some point in life, perhaps just before the wedding or when there’s an upcoming marathon, would want to try a diet, specifically for losing weight. However, we might tend to get confused with a number of diet types available. Here’s a quick post to briefly enlighten you about the basics behind dieting.

Calories, Calories, Calories!

By far ‘calories’ is one word we often focus about in a weight loss regimen. In simple terms, calories is the amount of energy contained in the food we eat. Energy here includes carbohydrates, proteins and fats. And it’s these calories that we use for just everything we do, from thinking to running. In general, we require 2000 calories for a day’s activity. But remember this requirement varies with age, gender and most importantly with the activity level of a person.

Well, what’s that got to do with the diet?

The two dietary plans that contradict each other are the Crash Diet and the Balanced Diet. Crash Diet is like a crash course wherein one cuts off the fat and carbohydrate intake and thus the calorie amount drastically in a narrow period of time. Of course, weight loss is quick in this case. Whereas, Balanced Diet aims at maintaining balanced levels of fats, carbohydrates and proteins while meeting the calorie requirement of the body without over-doing or under-doing. Weight loss is not always the necessary effect here.

Benefits of Balanced Diet

First of all, we need to understand that ‘fats’ are not our enemies. Essential fatty acids, popularly termed as the good fat, is a compulsory need for proper metabolism of the body. In a balanced diet, these good fats form an important part of the plan. Thus the regular metabolism is not distracted. Varied source of food is a key factor in balanced diet. It not only supports the system with adequate vitamins and minerals that boost immunity but also satisfy the palate emotionally.

Nutritional Compromises in a Crash Diet

The crash diet wipes out all the fats entering the system; both good and bad, leading to severe fat deficiency with time. A less-known factor is about the fat-storing carbohydrates. Think what happens when the body is deprived of calories. The blood sugar level drops. Next? It triggers the production of Insulin which is also a fat-storage promoter. That means, when the body is made to starve, indirectly, fat-storage is activated instead of fat-burning. This is one of the reasons why people following a crash diet regain weight as quickly as they lost. That is why it is essential to focus on eating the right fats instead of eating less fats.
