And We Met Again…

Best FriendsOver the years, with the addition of new places and people, we tend to keep wearing several masks one over the other; sometimes to hide the ones beneath and at other times to pretend what we are not. This is a natural process by which we keep evolving to a newer identity as we cope up with life and its situations. In the process, we begin to associate ourselves to somebody who might not be the one who was years ago. This new version of ourselves could have become better in some ways and might have turned unpleasant in other ways, that’s to do it with the evolutionary path we’ve taken along. And those people who are close to us like our parents and siblings, keep adapting to our newer forms as well along with us.

However, when something on the way, comes in front of us that can effortlessly remove all our masks and show that naked form of us, it is then that we realize the real essence of the journey we’ve come so far.

Meeting her again was such an important moment of life!

We’ve been friends since age three. My earliest memory being with her is fighting over the pretty doll she had, on the middle of the street. Through the years, for most part, we made silly fights for Samprus Vs Agassi, Kumble Vs Jadeja, Green Vs Blue, Section B Vs Section D and several unreasonably silly matters that one can imagine. Nevertheless, except for those times of getting ready to school and going to bed, we continued our chats, fights and mocking all day.  I remember being in the ‘who’s right who’s better’ mode until we grew a little bigger to age fifteen. At this point, our friendship took a different turn. We began acknowledging the untold bond between us, realizing how we’ve filled each other’s lives. Healthy discussions, aspiring ideas, confession of fears, expressions of emotions – we turned out to be the best of friends through our teens.

Sometimes, when we get to pair up with the right person, we may feel like life’s heading in the right direction, isn’t?. That’s what we felt.

Ironically, our directions changed when I  soon moved to another city. New connections shall certainly not replace the person you’ve known ever since you started to walk and talk. Though life moved on, that part of being with her all the time remained empty in me.Sometimes I think our destinies might have turned a different way if we hadn’t gone apart at that point.

Though we couldn’t find an opportunity to stay at the same place there after, we did meet and spend time at all possible holidays. College, work, love, marriage – we remained glued through our twenties as well. Marriage took her miles apart though it didn’t make a big difference as we got used to living away from each other and of course we had new entries and new phases to fill our lives.

Last year, she had been in India for a couple of months. After a long while, I felt a revival of our long-lost times. We roamed together, shopped together, had healthy discussions, shared our aspiring ideas, confessed our fears and expressed all those burdened emotions, within us. There was so much to talk, so much to vent out. Though it was a short reunion, it left me with deep contemplation, realization and discovery.

Meeting her again was such an important moment of life!  It was a time I could relate to my old self again because with her, there was no fear of rejection, misunderstanding, overpowering and whatsoever and also there wasn’t the need to pretend either. What was I as a little girl, I never realized until I reconnected with her again because she’s been with that little girl so much heart and soul.

Sometimes, we need a rewind in life. Rewind of what we were and what we passed to become what we are now. And what we could discover in the rewind process is a treasure. My long-buried goals I had as a child, my sense of humour that I left behind somewhere on the way, the change in taste, preferences and priorities – she brought back everything alive! There came a new confidence and a new hope that I perhaps cannot explain about.

May be, should I put it as, my plainly sailing days found a new Look Up?!!!
