If you ever happen to witness a road crisis, get alert and ACT! Few tips below to tell you how to act so you don’t have to be one among the stand and stare characters.
Having witnessed three road crisis in a single day, I am put to a compelling impulse to write a post on this today. An unimaginable quarrel between two men, another raging quarrel in the middle of a heavy traffic and a man screaming in pain in a motor bike accident – while the first two are senseless acts of road ragers, the last one left me feeling disturbed.
As an onlooker of a road accident, the easiest that you can do is stand and stare. I’ve done that before! Beyond humanity and courtesy, the sudden fear in giving a hand to a male stranger stopped me helping. I am writing this to tell you all not to do what I did that day. Once I had to play the other role – having got hit on the head in a road accident, I fell unconscious and an angel on Earth roads took me to a hospital. She stays as an angel in my memory forever!
The next time you are in such a situation, don’t hesitate as I did. Become an angel and take a step. Sometimes though few of us want to help, we might lack sufficient presence of mind to act at the right moment. Please take few minutes to run your eyes on these helpful points, might come to a noble use someday.
1. Remember that the person who got hit is in a shock. Even if it were his/her mistake, avoid harassing with blames at once. And it’s not wise to pester them repeatedly about how it happened.
2. A thoughtful bus mate was ready with a bottle of water today when we had spotted out the accident from a distance. Fetching water helps! Ask bystanders, spot shops or try if the person himself is carrying one. Having few sips of water can help the person to come down from shock and relieve from disturbed breathing. And if going to unconsciousness is involved, only water can help immediately!
3. Call others on the road for help. One can call a number, one can give water, one can take care of first aid – you don’t have to act a single hero.
4. Depending on the medical emergency condition, call an ambulance service. The location and the medical condition needs to be explained to the emergency service. Take assistance if you cannot speak the local language. Also be kind to inform a relative/friend. A wise act would be to call the last number dialed if you can find his mobile.
108 – If you are in one of these states – Andra Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Goa, TamilNadu, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Assam, Meghalaya and Madhya Pradesh – This number works.
1062 – An additional number for Bangaloreans!
202-4545 – For Mumbaites!
If you can save this number in your mobile as emergency, then you don’t have to remember the digits, you only have to scroll down during a crisis.
5. As a first aid, take care to keep them breathing and stop any bleeding.

* Do NOT wash a head wound that is deep or bleeding a lot.
* Do NOT remove any object sticking out of a wound.
* Do NOT move the person unless absolutely necessary.
* Do NOT shake the person if he or she seems dazed.
* Do NOT remove a helmet if you suspect a serious head injury.
* Do NOT pick up a fallen child with any sign of head injury.

At least when there is no one else on the road for help, PLEASE DO NOT STAND AND STARE!

That was a great piece of info. It has happened to me and I know how dangerous head injuries are. When I was hit, I lost consciousness and when I regained, I had a temporary memory loss. The girl who had taken me to the hospital kept on asking me a lot of questions to pull my memory back and it really helped.
